Food waste

A new waste system is being introduced in Trondheim from 2023 and in the coming years. You will be informed ahead of receiving the new waste bins/containers. If you don’t have bins/containers for food waste outside your house yet, then food waste should be sorted as general waste.

Bins/containers for food waste have a green label. Food waste is collected at your house, building or housing cooperative.

Plastic packaging

Bins/containers for plastic pacaging have a purple label. Plastic packaging is recycled to make new produkcts. Collection of plastic waste is organized the same way as paper and cardboard (below).

Paper and cardboard

Bins/containers for paper and cardboard have a blue label.

Inner city residents must bring paper and cardboard waste to designated containers in the area, known as Midtbypunkt. If you live in residential/suburban areas the waste is collected at your house, building or housing cooperative. Paper and cardboard is recycled to make new products.

Glass and metal packaging

Residents who have received the new food waste sorting system, and have green plastic waste bins outside their homes, have now also got a bin for glass and metal packaging. For other residents glass and metal packaging must be brought to designated containers in your area, known as Returpunkt. Bins/containers have a light green and grey label.

General waste

Bins/containers for general waste have a black label.

General waste is collected at your house, building or housing cooperative. General waste is incinerated and provides heating for hundreds of houses in Trondheim.

Hazardous waste

Every household should receive a red box for hazardous waste. Hazardous waste is collected twice a year, and is sorted manually and disposed of in an environmentally safe way.
